Choosing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine is one concrete expression of the call to love our neighbours, protecting our community from serious illness and from the burdens of ongoing social isolation and economic disruption.
Therefore, the Church of the Ascension executive committee has decided that all staff and volunteers, eligible for vaccination and involved in the leadership of in-person worship and gatherings, must be fully vaccinated.(This includes greeters, musicians, readers, prayer leaders, communion assistants, etc.) This requirement is a witness to the community of our commitment to their safety and, we hope, an encouragement to all to get vaccinated. It is also a means of ensuring we have done all we can to protect our volunteers from infection as they offer their services to the church.
How this will work: Before being added to the pool of in-person volunteers, individuals will bring a record of their vaccination to a service at the church building. Rhonda or her designate will visually check that the record matches your name, and that it is at least 14 days since your final dose of a vaccine approved by Health Canada.
About your personal information: We will record only your name, and that the vaccination requirement has been met. This record will be kept on paper, in a secure location. We’ve committed to revisit this policy no later than a year from now, and will destroy the records if vaccination is no longer required.
Vaccinations and Church Attendance: Vaccination is not a requirement to attend in-person services as we strive to remain open to the general public. This means we cannot guarantee that all people present have been vaccinated and so you are encouraged to assess your own risk and comfort levels. Remember that our Zoom services will continue as needed (and vaccinations are not required for Zoom volunteers).
Facing barriers to access the vaccine?: We recognize that folks may face barriers to vaccine access. As a community, we’d like to help everyone who is eligible to access vaccination as it is one of the best ways to protect volunteers and community members from becoming seriously ill or transmitting the virus to others. If you would like, members of the executive (all of whom are fully vaccinated) can offer booking & transportation support.
Questions or concerns about the vaccine?: Questions about the vaccine are normal, and we have doctors in the parish who would be happy to talk to you. Contact the office to be put in touch with them.
